Connecting Tides

The Art of Plastic Awareness

Creating visual narratives from plastics washing up on our shores.

Our oceans are drowning in plastic—5 to 13 million tonnes enter marine ecosystems annually, carried by currents to even the most remote shores. Connecting Tides explores this global crisis through art, revealing how pollution transcends borders and connects us all in unexpected ways.

About the project

Connecting Tides is a month-long residency project at Studio Kura in Itoshima, Japan where we’ll collect, document, and transform beach plastics found on Kyushu’s shores. Through methodical exploration and artistic interpretation, we aim to reveal the hidden narratives within these discarded materials and highlight our collective environmental responsibility.

About us

The project merges Janet Otter’s sculptural approach with Bob Corporaal’s generative art expertise. Janet transforms discarded plastics into intricate marine-inspired artworks, while Bob uses creative coding to visualize pollution patterns and connections. Together, their complementary perspectives offer a multifaceted exploration of our complex relationship with waste.
